Some of you may know that I am married to Tom Barnhill, who owns Business by Barnhill. Business by Barnhill provides accounting, CFO and advising services for small businesses. For the past few years, I have been involved, on the periphery of the Business by Barnhill. I handle all the social media, and I have helped with advising for a few businesses too. I’m always behind the scenes supporting Tom with decisions on how to grow and evolve the business.
Over the past year or two, Tom has wanted to expand the business to provide more services to small businesses. His first thought was branding, because he knew that I could support that expansion, since I have experience with design. I pushed back, a lot, because I just didn’t think I was ready to jump into branding for businesses. Branding for weddings is one thing, but I felt I needed more experience to be able to provide the appropriate level of experience and service to businesses.
And, then came Jen Lowe. Tom and I have known Jen Lowe for over 10 years. We first met her when she took pictures of our family when the twins were about 3 (photo below). Our son Logan has autism and family photos were hard because he was often in his own little world. Jen came to our house and took the most amazing photos of us. She let the kids run and play and do their own thing. In one photo, you can see Logan clutching his Thomas the train toy.
Long story short (too late?), before and while having her own successful photography business, Jen was a senior designer and art director for several agencies and design firms. She mentioned at our photo shoot this past year (photo below so you can see how the whole Barnhill family has changed through the years) that she wanted to get back into doing more design work, but didn’t know where to start. Tom jumped on the idea instantly. I felt like having someone with real branding experience with businesses was the thing I needed to feel like Business by Barnhill could successfully provide branding services to our clients.
Luckily, Jen agreed to join Business by Barnhill as our branding and photography director. And, I agreed to partner with Jen. Each branding client will have both of our support and expertise. I’m really looking forward to branching out of my wedding comfort zone and also helping more with Business by Barnhill. Of course, I’m still designing wedding invitations with Allison Barnhill Designs. I don’t think that will ever change! I’m just being a little more selective with my clients and I admit, my schedule fills up a little more quickly.
